Believe me, you aren't the first person that has happened to. I can't really comment on your particular situation, but from the instances I have seen, the blame was equally on the part of the filer as well as the tax preparer: the filer gave incomplete information regarding dependency status, and the preparer did not bother to ask for further clarification. You really can't base your opinion on one instance (well, you can but shouldn't), as you haven't had issues in the past using paid preparers, unless that was just one of many examples of unsatisfactory service. Even the best make mistakes on occasion, and it is well documented that professionals do make plenty of mistakes when preparing tax returns.

Last year I did my taxes with my CPA as I always have. Buy he also does my parents'. He filed me as a dependent of them but didn't file me on their taxes. Idiot. I haven't been a dependent for a couple of years. As a result I got half of my return and wasn't eligible for the stimulus. I'll get it with this years return, but I'm not sure if I trust the tax pros anymore.
