If You Haven't Gotten Your Digital Conversion Coupons, You're Out of Luck…At Least For Now
The government subsidized coupon program to help consumers equip themselves for the upcoming digital broadcast conversion on February 17, 2009 is done for now. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the government agency in charge of supplying the coupons, which had an operating budget of $1.34 Billion dollars has exhausted its budget.
Not to worry, though, as the program is still accepting application and adding them to a waiting list until more money gets freed up to restart the program. The good thing is that since each coupon is only valid for 90 days, each time a coupon goes unused the money gets recirculated back into the program. This allows for unused coupons to be reissued to those consumers on the waiting list, and not going to waste. The problem, however is that the analog broadcasting signals are still going to be terminated as of February 17, which may leave many consumers in the dark, at least in regards to their televisions.
This might not have been such an issue when the program was first announced, as the housing and securities markets were both still healthy at the time. The idea was that it would have been a great time: economic conditions were good, pricing on newer television standards were falling, and everything was supposed to be fine. Little did anyone expect that as the conversion date approached the economy would be in turmoil, and people would be in need of the government subsidies more than ever.

But, guess what? NTIA administrators are petitioning congress for assistance. Think about it: the government bailing out the government! Why not, though, since everyone else is clammoring for the government to throw money their way and bail them out of trouble. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next…
