Did You Get Everything You Wanted For The Holidays?

Christmas is over and Hanukkah is coming to an end.  After the dust settled, and all of the gifts were unwrapped did you end up getting everything that you had hoped for?  Personally I got just what I had asked for for myself: nothing. It’s not that I’m anti-holidays or anti-gift giving, I just do not want for many things, especially things that I cannot get for myself.  The one gift I did receive was a Jelly belly dispenser that I was looking for, which a friend of mine remembered and gave me (and which I enjoyed a little too much at one time!)

What I did ask for from people, however, was unwanted household and clothing items.  I got some strange looks, and a few people said “Huh?”, but I was dead serious.  I know a few people who have been complaining that they need to do some “spring cleaning” and had to much clutter laying around so I said that if they do their cleaning and find things they just do not need or want any longer I would take those items off their hands.  The one thing I said was that I am not going to fill out a receipt for any tax deduction.  I just think that sometimes it is better to give without the enticement of any kind of “reward”.  Besides, there are people who can use these items much more than I can use a couple of dollars to offset my income.

So, I am getting ready to drive to WalMart where the Goodwill truck is stationed with bags of clothing, bedding, childrens’ toys, books, and towels.  I hardly see anyone in that part of the parking lot but even if I am the only one to donate today it beats having no one show up.  Even though the holiday is over, some people are always in need, and it truly feels good to be doing something to help.

I had a little hissy fit with my family about gifts this year. We go thru this every frigging year. I don’t want gifts. I don’t need anything, I live in a very small 1 bedroom apartment. There is no room for anything new. If you buy me something new that means I have to get rid of something. I don’t want to get rid of something as I have a select collection of stuff that makes me happy. I don’t want anything and if I do I just go out and buy it, usually used. Anyhoo, I actually convinced the family to use the $ to give to charity. I donated $ to charities and they donated to charity and I was happy. Everyone wins. I am sad that this concept is such a hard sell with my family.

I am not as nice as you think, one of the reasons I ask for them to give to charity is that they give the worse, most inappropriate gifts in the world. They cannot possibly screw up charity. My brother in law did ignore me and gave me a book. It’s very important when you re gift, you don’t give the person a book that THEY gave you 12 years ago for christmas. I took the book, pretended I was happy and left it in the free cycle in the laundry room of my building. It was a very funny book so I imagine someone is enjoying it.

But all in all it was a good christmas.

Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand when someone doesn’t want for anything. Even if you got hem to donate time, as long as you were finally able to convince them to do anything charitable, it was a good deed. And, I agree about those who give really bad gifts. Some people just have a warped sense of what is interesting, funny, cool, or useful and you just have to stand there and at least appreciate the sentiment, if not the gift itself.
